Rockstar Hires Creators of Grand Theft Auto V’s Largest Roleplay Community

Despite being almost a decade old, Grand Theft Auto V remains one of the most popular games worldwide. As of now, over 151,000 individuals are actively playing it on Steam, and it continues to significantly contribute to the financial success of Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games.

RPGs have played a major role in GTA V’s continued popularity, with tens of thousands of players creating mods to create characters that live, work and play more freely in San Andreas and Los Santos. Now Rockstar is making moves in that area as Cfx.re, the team behind the biggest mods and communities for GTA V (FiveM) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (RedM), has joined the publisher.

“Over the past few years, we’ve watched with excitement as Rockstar’s creative community has found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through the creation of dedicated RPG servers,” Rockstar wrote. ad. “To further support these efforts, we recently expanded our mod policy to officially include those made by the RPG creative community. By partnering with the Cfx.re team, we’re helping them find new ways to support this incredible community and improve the services they provide to their developers and players.”

The Cfx.re crew is also excited about the change. “This is a huge step forward in the growth of our community and an opportunity for us to work with Rockstar Games to further the FiveM platform and the creative community around it,” the team wrote in a forum post. “While there will be no significant changes to our day-to-day operations, with Rockstar’s support we plan to continue improving our platform and we’re really excited about what this means for our users, community and creators!”

As Polygon points out, more than 170,000 players were using FiveM on custom servers as of Friday morning, according to the mod’s website. The popular NoPixel server runs on FiveM and uses custom scripts to enhance the RPG experience.

Rockstar and Cfx.re are not fully detailed about their plans for FiveM and RedM. Anyway, Rockstar can now do whatever they want with the mods. It definitely wants to continue supporting GTA Online and its communities for the foreseeable future, but there is the small matter of a new Grand Theft Auto game on the horizon.

When Grand Theft Auto VI debuts—perhaps next year—with the help of the Cfx.re team, it could feature strong RPGs. As such, it’s possible that Rockstar can completely own the GTA VI role-playing scene since it’s already in the game and restricts mods. This is speculation, to be honest, but the impact this acquisition will have on the GTA RPG community for years to come is worth considering.
